What to Eat After Teeth Whitening in Istanbul: The White Diet & Keeping Your Shade | Yayla Dental

In short: After teeth whitening, especially in the first 24–48 hours, teeth are more easily affected by foods and drinks that stain; during this period a “white diet” of light-coloured, low-acid foods is recommended. Tea, coffee, red wine, cola, dark sauces and smoking are the main things to avoid. Whitening is not permanent; depending on your habits, the shade usually fades somewhat within 1–3 years. Regular cleaning, sensible consumption of coloured drinks and short touch-up treatments recommended by your dentist help keep the colour longer. Whether you have your teeth whitened in Istanbul or at home, these tips apply.

Why is a white diet recommended after whitening?

Whitening gels contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These substances penetrate enamel and dentine, oxidise the organic molecules that cause discolouration and produce a lighter shade. During and immediately after the procedure, the tooth surface may be temporarily a little more permeable and slightly dehydrated; the thin protective film that saliva forms on enamel also takes a while to rebuild.

During this short window, dark pigments can attach to teeth more easily. That is why the “white diet” is recommended: the aim is to prevent the newly achieved shade from staining in the first days and to let the colour settle.

How long should the white diet last?

The most sensitive period is usually the first 24–48 hours. With at-home (tray) whitening, paying attention to coloured foods and drinks throughout treatment — that is, on all the days you wear the trays — improves the result. Your dentist can recommend a period tailored to the method used and the condition of your teeth.

What can and can’t you eat after whitening?

Good choices (light-coloured)Avoid in the first days (staining / acidic)
Water, plain milk, plain ayran (yogurt drink)Tea, coffee, red wine, cola, dark fruit juices
White cheese, curd cheese, plain yogurtTomato paste, ketchup, soy sauce, dark sauces
Chicken, turkey, white fishBeetroot, pomegranate, sour cherries, blackberries, blueberries
Rice, pasta (with white sauce), potatoesStrongly coloured spices such as curry and turmeric
Bananas, peeled apples, cauliflowerAcidic foods such as lemon, orange and vinegar pickles
Oats, white bread, egg whitesDark chocolate, coloured sweets

Although acidic foods do not stain on their own, they can soften enamel and increase both sensitivity and susceptibility to staining; that is why they are on the list.

A sample day on the white diet

Planning the first 48 hours makes the question “What can I eat?” easier. The example below is only for ideas; if you follow a special diet or have a health condition, adapt your eating plan accordingly.

  • Breakfast: White cheese, boiled egg (mainly the white), white bread or plain porridge, a glass of milk or water.
  • Snack: A banana or peeled apple, plain yogurt.
  • Lunch: Grilled chicken or white fish, rice or boiled potatoes, cauliflower.
  • Dinner: Pasta with a cream or yogurt sauce, ayran.
  • Drinks: Water throughout the day; plain water instead of dark herbal teas and flavoured drinks.

When you cannot avoid a coloured food, rinsing with water immediately afterwards is the most practical solution. If you are eating out — as many visitors to Istanbul will be — choosing dishes with white sauces, grilled meats and plain side dishes makes things easier. The goal of the white diet is not perfection but reducing the risk of staining in the first days; a single small exception usually won’t spoil the result, but coloured drinks that become a habit will make a difference over time.

Smoking and whitening

Tobacco products are among the causes of the most stubborn tooth stains and quickly reduce the effect of whitening. Whitening sources recommend that heavy smokers avoid tobacco during treatment, as there are open questions about how certain harmful substances from tobacco interact with peroxide. Whitening can also be good motivation to cut down or quit smoking.

What if you can’t give up tea and coffee?

After the first 48 hours, giving up coloured drinks completely is not realistic for most people. Habits that can help protect the shade include:

  • Drink tea or coffee at set times and fairly quickly, rather than sipping throughout the day.
  • Rinse your mouth with water or drink a glass of water afterwards.
  • Drink cold coloured drinks through a straw where possible.
  • Adding milk to coffee can somewhat reduce its staining effect.
  • Do not brush immediately after an acidic drink; wait half an hour to an hour.
Practical tip: In the days right after whitening, instead of thinking “I ate something coloured, I’ll brush straight away”, rinse with water first. Gentle brushing twice a day with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste helps reduce both sensitivity and staining.

What if you get sensitivity after whitening?

Short-term sensitivity to cold is common after whitening and is usually temporary. During this period, avoiding very cold and very hot food and drinks and choosing room-temperature foods is soothing. If sensitivity is noticeable, your dentist may recommend a desensitising toothpaste or gel; with at-home whitening you may need to shorten wearing time or take a break for a few days. If sensitivity is severe, or if there is gum irritation or the tray does not fit properly, stop using it and contact your dentist.

How long do whitening results last?

Whitening is not a permanent procedure. Operative dentistry sources state that results generally remain noticeable for about 1–3 years, and may last longer in some people. The main factors that determine how long include:

  • Coloured-drink and smoking habits
  • Oral hygiene and regular professional cleaning (scaling)
  • The type of original discolouration (age-related yellowing usually responds better)

On your dentist’s advice, short “touch-up” treatments can be done with your existing custom trays. How often and for how long should be decided individually; repeating it frequently on your own can increase sensitivity.

When should fillings and crowns be done after whitening?

Whitening only lightens natural tooth structure; the colour of existing fillings, veneers and crowns does not change. So if fillings or veneers on the front teeth need to be renewed, whitening is usually done first, and once the shade has settled, the colour of the restoration is matched to the new tooth colour.

In addition, oxygen residues left in the tooth immediately after whitening can temporarily weaken the bond of adhesives (bonding) to enamel. Sources recommend carrying out bonded procedures at least one week after whitening is completed; in practice, waiting a little longer for the colour to stabilise may also be preferred — worth keeping in mind when planning a dental trip to Istanbul.

Frequently asked questions

When can I drink coffee after teeth whitening?

It is usually recommended to avoid coffee and tea for the first 24–48 hours. After that you can drink them; drinking them quickly and rinsing with water afterwards helps protect the shade.

Which fruits can I eat on the white diet?

Light-coloured, low-acid fruits such as bananas and peeled apples and pears are good choices. Dark fruits such as pomegranate, sour cherries and blackberries, and acidic fruits such as citrus, should be postponed for the first few days.

What happens if I smoke after teeth whitening?

Tobacco causes rapid and stubborn staining and shortens the effect of whitening. It is recommended to avoid smoking during treatment and in the first days afterwards.

Will whitened teeth go back to their old colour?

Yes, the colour can partly return over time. How long it lasts depends on your habits and is generally given as 1–3 years. Short touch-up treatments recommended by your dentist can help maintain the shade.

Will whitening also lighten my fillings?

No. The colour of fillings and crowns does not change. Old fillings on the front teeth may look darker after whitening; replacing them can be planned once the shade has settled.
