Many patients considering implant treatment come across country-of-origin phrases such as “German implant”, “Swiss implant” or “Korean implant”. Country of origin can give an idea, but on its own it is not enough to judge an implant’s quality and authenticity. In this article we explain what to look for when assessing an implant brand and when you want to be sure your own implant is original. As an example we use the information on the product labels and in the catalogue of the German manufacturer BEGO; this is an informational example, not a brand recommendation.

What does “German implant” mean?

Calling an implant “German” may mean that the manufacturer is headquartered in Germany, that the product was developed in Germany or that it is manufactured in Germany. These are not always the same thing. Some companies develop in one country and manufacture in another. For example, BEGO Implant Systems states in its technical documents that RS/RSX implants are developed and manufactured entirely in Germany. Such information is the manufacturer’s statement and should be considered together with the manufacturer’s address on the product label.

The key point to remember is this: wherever an implant is made, what determines its quality is its manufacturing and quality management processes, surface characteristics, scientific and clinical data and long-term parts support.

What information is on an implant label?

The labels of implants placed on the market in Europe contain certain standard symbols and information. The example label shown in BEGO’s product catalogue includes the following:

• Manufacturer’s name and address
• Product description, diameter and length, with a colour code according to diameter
• REF (product/article number)
• LOT (batch number): Shows which production batch the product came from; this is the key information for traceability.
• Expiry date
• Sterilisation method (e.g. the symbol for sterilisation by irradiation), and “do not reuse” and “do not resterilise” symbols
• CE mark and “medical device” symbol
• Data Matrix code: Contains the manufacturer and product number and, where required, the batch number and expiry date.
• Electronic instructions-for-use address and patient information website

It is also important that the packaging is undamaged. Labels carry a “do not use if package is damaged” warning; the sterile barrier system must remain intact until the implant is opened during surgery.

How is an implant’s registration checked in Turkey?

Medical devices sold and used in Turkey are registered in the Ürün Takip Sistemi (ÜTS, Product Tracking System) run by the Türkiye İlaç ve Tıbbi Cihaz Kurumu (Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency). Products are tracked in this system by barcode and batch information. Turkish residents can view some records of medical devices applied to them via e-Devlet (the Turkish e-government portal); however, whether each record appears there depends on the device type and whether it was reported. If you cannot see the record — as is usually the case for international patients treated in Istanbul — the most practical route is to ask the clinic that treated you for a copy of the implant labels.

What is an implant card and why does it matter?

An implant card (called a “patient passport” by some manufacturers) is a document recording the brand, model, diameter, length and LOT of the implants placed in your mouth. Usually the small labels from the implant packaging are stuck onto this card. BEGO states in its product catalogue that it offers patients a patient passport containing treatment information and documentation of the restoration.

An implant card is useful in these situations:

• When a dentist in another city or country needs to repair or replace your prosthesis
• When finding the right spare part for problems such as screw loosening or fracture
• When the manufacturer issues a notice about a production batch, to find out whether you are affected
• When a doctor needs device information for tests such as MRI (labels may include “MR conditional” information)

How should an implant brand be assessed?

Choosing a brand is the dentist’s area of expertise; still, it helps to know the following criteria so you can ask the right questions:

As an example of a guarantee programme, BEGO describes a programme called “BEGO SECURITY Implants” in its product catalogue: the company states that it provides 60 months of cover from the date of implantation under certain conditions and that the programme may not be valid in every country. Because the scope and conditions of such programmes vary from country to country, the details should be obtained from your dentist and the manufacturer’s current documents before treatment.

When should you be suspicious?

• No information is given about the implant’s brand or model
• Your request for the label, LOT number or implant card is not met
• The packaging looks as if it has been opened beforehand or labels are missing
• The brand is glossed over with only general phrases such as “made in Germany” or “Swiss-made”

These situations do not always mean there is a problem; but open communication and proper records are the foundation of long-term implant care.
