Dental Check-up in Bahçelievler: Tartar and Bad Breath

A regular dental check-up in Bahçelievler allows problems to be detected before they turn into pain. For patients coming from Bahçelievler, Bakırköy, Şirinevler, Yenibosna, Güngören, Bağcılar and Zeytinburnu, our clinic is located at Basın Sitesi, opposite Migros. This guide summarises the three topics we come across most often among local patients: tartar, bad breath and routine check-ups.

Why does tartar form?

Plaque on the tooth surface mineralises and hardens into tartar (dental calculus); the rate at which it builds up varies from person to person (Anerud et al., 1991). Calculus and gum inflammation have been associated with disease progression in early-onset periodontitis (Albandar et al., 1998). Tartar cannot be removed by brushing at home; professional cleaning is required (Hinrichs & Thumbigere-Math, 2019).

Bad breath: find the source first

Bad breath is largely caused by volatile sulphur compounds (Tonzetich, 1971), and in most cases the source lies within the mouth (Quirynen et al., 2019). An examination and professional cleaning are therefore the first steps. For more, see our dental health guides.

Routine check-ups and fillings

Early tooth decay can be managed with a small filling. For more information, see our dental treatments page and the patient guides in our dental health section.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book an appointment if I live outside Bahçelievler?

Yes. Patients from Bakırköy, Şirinevler, Yenibosna, Güngören, Bağcılar and Zeytinburnu can also book an appointment for an examination.

How often should tartar be removed?

Your dentist will set the interval based on the condition of your gums and how quickly tartar builds up.

Does bad breath always come from the mouth?

In most cases the source is inside the mouth (the tongue, gums or plaque); however, other causes may also need to be assessed.

What happens at the first examination?

Your mouth and teeth are examined, X-rays are taken if needed, and the treatment options are explained to you.
